Shattuck-St. Mary’s Prep x Culver, at Shattuck Prep Tournament
The score was 8-2 but the action was relatively back-and-forth. Shattuck’s finishing was excellent, they could have gone to double digits but that was mostly because they made the most of their chances whereas Culver didn’t get as much accomplished offensively. Culver had a number of good-looking players, but I primarily honed in on a few Shattuck names:
01 D Jackson LaCombe (Minnesota) was quite noticeable from early on. He’s capable with the puck, opportunistic, and I liked his passing. Reliable to make the good first pass, break it out, carry it and make plays when needed. Good stick, too.
Center Brendan Brisson (Michigan) is the player who probably most grew on me. The late-2001 born Michigan recruit isn’t eligible until the 2020 draft but the son of super-agent Pat Brisson is for real. When he’s playing loose, creatively with the puck, I love what he brings to the table. Not particularly tall, possesses the puck with a nice skill level and confidence. Poised center.
Mackie Samoskevich, another Michigan recruit, looked sharp especially for a late-2002. The recently-turned-16-year-old has the earmarks of someone who could come on seriously strong as an offensive prospect leading into his draft. Brother of 2018 2nd overall CWHL draft pick Melissa Samoskevich, Quinnipiac’s captain this season. He’s an excellent look on the rush, likes to try things with the puck.
Another late-2002 in defender Scott Morrow was intriguing. Like Samoskevich, he’s young and has a ways to go but when he had the puck he was appealing, showed his upside with decisive moves. His skating and overall game can definitely be improved but he’s one to keep an eye on.
Artem Shlaine, Kent Lee, Hutson Karpman, Tyler Rollwagen and Jayden Price were a few other names I also noticed throughout the game. As far as Culver goes, I focused on Shattuck but Spencer Cox was a player I had been familiar with in the past. I felt the 2001-born defender had an alright game. He made a nice seam one-time pass to score late in the third. I’ll check on both of these teams again this season.
